Art Studio Update

Greetings from the art studio!
Spring is finally catching up to the artwork students are creating in their art learning lab!

Our youngest artists are finishing ceramic flowers which will be displayed for all to see during the Spring Concerts before they travel home.

First grade is sculpting ceramic figures to go with their box town.  Children were challenged to make standing figures.  Many have accessories and pets too!

Second graders are challenged with making artwork which is personally meaningful and represents their home base- we are connecting to the baseball themed concert.  Students’ unique problem solving and the art of play and experimentation are visually evident in their work.

Third graders have been working on illustrations in art class to go with fables they wrote in their classrooms for many months.  Their art and stories will be on display at the Norman Rockwell Museum with an opening this Sunday 11am-4pm.  All Muddy Brook families can visit the museum and grounds for free this Sunday!

Fourth graders are creating gargoyles and grotesques along with gallery cards- see some on display in the case by Nurse Becky’s office.  3rd and fourth graders are weaving a techno-color dream coat for their concert too!

The natural world is changing quickly during the spring season and is a wonderful time to observe with artist’s eyes.  Look around for new colors, shapes and textures everyday as you walk, work and play outdoors.
Artfully yours, Ms. B.

Blizzard Bags

We have the opportunity to make up two of our missed days through Blizzard Bag activities.  Below is the letter from Ms. Berle that went home to families.  I hope you take advantage of this opportunity over vacation.  Have a wonderful, restful break filled with family, outdoors, and art fun!
 Love, Ms. B.
p.s. Please note that the Norman Rockwell Museum free family day for Muddy Brook date has changed to Sunday, April 29th

Dear Families,

As you know well we missed two days of school in January due to a burst pipe
and subsequent flooding at school. We are petitioning the Massachusetts
Department of Education to make up those days with structured learning at
home. If ninety percents of our students participate in community activities over
break or on weekends between now and May 20, and students complete a
short assignment reflecting on those experiences, we may be able to make up
those days without adding two days to our school year.

Here is what we need to do.

Part One
Start a conversation at home about trying some new experiences.
Choose two activities to engage in with your child. Choices include going to:

  • Norman Rockwell Museum Free Family Day on April 29 or a visit
          to the Norman Rockwell Museum
  • Mud Day at Muddy Brook on May 19
  • Berkshire Museum
  • TURN Park
  • MassMOCA
  • Berkshire Botanical Garden
  • a hike up Monument Mountain, Laurel’s Tower in Stockbridge,
  • Bartholomew’s Cobble in Sheffield, or Pleasant Valley Sanctuary in Lenox
  • Boy Scout or Girl Scout meetings
  • a public library to acquire a card and take out books
  • classes over break at a local cultural organization or community center
  • A venue of your choice to participate in an educational family activity outdoors or at a cultural institution.

Note: Free passes to cultural institutions are available for sign out at our
local public libraries.

Part Two
For each activity:

1) Write a brief review of the experience. Include:

what you did and where,
something you learned,
something that surprised you,
what you would recommend about this experience.

2) Draw a picture about a memorable part of the experience.
3) Take a photo if possible.
4) Write about a personal connection

Thank you for participating!
