Halloween History

 Greetings from the art studio!

Now that October is well underway and the weather is STARTING to feel a bit like fall, pumpkins and ghosts are popping up in student work.  As a student-led, choice based studio the subject of artists' work is usually their own.  Our art rule for school is we leave violence and blood and guts alone. Children make art about what they think about and wonder about.  Sometimes artists create scary art to understand, gain power over a fear, or just because it's fun.  We say our school art shouldn't give grandmas nightmares or make little kids cry.  If children are exploring this art genre or play at home talk about it.  I am sure you will have a fascinating conversation and may learn about a video game or your child's interest in World War II.

Here is a short little video about the history of Halloween (also available in Spanish).  One of my favorite holidays!  https://mass.pbslearningmedia.org/resource/c909d77b-e7fc-487e-8ae6-80c92609af1f/halloween-all-about-the-holidays/#

Happy October, Ms. B.
